Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for the
position of Director of Community Services.
The Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University is a
comprehensive student affairs program which serves a major state university
and land grant college. The Division of Student Affairs encompasses a wide
array of departmental services and programs addressing the needs of a student
body of approximately 21,000.
Colorado State is in Fort Collins, a city of 100,000 which is 65 miles north
of Denver. The city offers a unique blend of metropolitan advantages and
small town friendliness. Located at the western edge of the Great Plains and
at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, Fort Collins with its
ideal climate provides easy access to numerous outdoor activities.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Office of Community Services (OCS) at Colorado State University offers a
continuum of service-learning and volunteer opportunities for Colorado State
University students. OCS offers both extra-curricular and curricular
service-learning projects. The Director is responsible for providing general
oversight and leadership to OCS, managing all aspects of the organization,
supervising three full-time staff and over ten student staff. The Director is
responsible for developing and maintaining the annual budget. The Director
consults and plans with university and community members and professionals
from the non-profit sector to develop partnerships and placements that meet
real and identified community needs, and that offer both community members
and students an opportunity to further understand the conditions that give
rise to the need for community service. The Director develops overall
policies and procedures. The Director co-teaches a graduate workshop on
service-learning in higher education. The Director reports to the Associate
Vice-President of Student Affairs.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Provides leadership to the OCS staff which is comprised of several
teams.
II. Responsible for development and continuous improvement of OCS
policies and procedures.
III. Provide role modeling and serve as a mentor for leadership
development.
IV. Oversees administration of all aspects of developing and implementing
OCS service-learning & volunteer programs, training's and special events.
V. Responsible for hiring, staff development, supervision and evaluation
of professional, state classified and student staff.
VI. Responsible for overall budget development and reporting.
VII. Responsible for organizing and supporting the OCS Advisory Board.
Serve as a consulting member to Student Fee Review Board and the SIP Steering
Committee.
VIII. Co-teach HE692 Service Learning in Higher Education: Current Trends
and Issues each fall semester.
IX. Provide leadership and support to the Service Integration Project
Task Force.
X. Increase awareness, activity and resource support for community
service-learning.
XI. Provide leadership and support to the Alternative Break Program.
XII. Explore and develop innovative community service programming, through
collaborative relationships with agencies and organizations similarly
committed to community development and service-learning.
XIII. Responsible for organizational budget, strategic plans, and annual
reports.
XIV. Recruits and oversees partnerships with community non-profit
organizations.
XV. Assists students, faculty, staff and community members inquiring
about community service opportunities and models through individual
meetings, group forums, presentations, written materials, etc.
XVI. Represents office and service-learning on campus, community, state &
national committees.
XVII. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
XVIII. Masters degree in: Community Education, Social Work, Education,
Human Development, College Student Personnel, Experiential Education or
related degree.
XIX. Minimum of five years of full-time experience in community services
administration in higher education or in a similar field.
XX. Minimum of five years of experience and demonstrated expertise in
supervision of professional, graduate, and undergraduate staff..
XXI. Experience in grant writing and development desirable.
XXII. Demonstrated ability to work successfully with community leaders,
faculty and students.
XXIII. Fully understand and articulate a service learning philosophy, with
particular emphasis on public service in higher education spanning the
spectrum of curricular to extra-curricular programs.
XXIV. Ability to articulate a philosophy of student development at the
college and university level.
XXV. Potential to be a leader in the national service-learning field.
XXVI. Understand and articulate a philosophy that supports links between
the educational sector and the community sector.
XXVII. Ability to adjust to unusual situations and hours of work and a
willingness and interest in devoting time on weekends and evenings, when
appropriate and necessary.
XXVIII. Understand and articulate the needs and concerns of ethnically
diverse people, under represented populations, people with disabilities,
women, and people with non-traditional lifestyles.
XXIX. A demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity.
XXX. Demonstrated verbal and writing skills, including public speaking.
XXXI. Ability to work independently and creatively to solve problems,
create programs and to resolve differences.
XXXII. Optimistic, creative, and energetic leadership styles including the
ability to delegate responsibility, stimulate entrepreneurial activity and
utilize a student development model which empowers, supports and maintains
accountability.
SALARY
XXXIII. Commensurate with experience.
XXXIV. 12 month appointment with full benefit package.
