Re: Service-Learning and emotional intelligence

Kathy,
Take a look at Daniel Golman's book itself, Emotional Intelligence (1995). Chapter 15, The Cost of Emotional Illiteracy, provides both the theoretical and practical reasons for programs that look like service-learning and character education to deal with modern day problems of emotional survival. Chapter 16 provides more evidence of research and programs, such as Self Science, which can easily be associated with service-learning activities. Appendix F has a list of studies and results.
The problems he outlines and the solutions that have been developed provide some great examples of research that support service interventions to deal with emotional issues.
