The overall commitment of the AmeriCorps member (ACM) is to promote literacy, community-based learning and civic responsibility through Washington Campus Compact’s Campus Reads program. To that end, the ACM’s service will be divided in a variety of ways. Foremost, the ACM will act as both a tutor and mentor for Western Washington University’s (WWU) student-managed youth mentoring programs and as a liaison between those entities and WWU's Center for Service-Learning. The ACM will work 40 hours per week and will spend 25% of her/his time working directly with WWU's Center for Service-Learning, and 75% with the Native American Mentoring Program (NAMP). To enhance job performance, the ACM will be expected to attend related trainings and member development conferences sponsored by AmeriCorps and/or other agencies. In addition to providing weekly progress reports to the Center for Service-Learning and bi-weekly reports to Washington Campus Compact, the ACM will carefully document all service hours spent.
The following outline delineates ACM job duties.
16 hours per week will be spent providing direct service to Woodring College of Education’s Native American Mentoring Program (NAMP). S/he will tutor Native American middle school youth within Bellingham Public School District and the Lummi Nation and will provide general support to the NAMP program.
9 hours per week will be spent providing additional support to NAMP in the following areas:
· Recruit, train, support volunteers.
· Develop campus forum, service projects; network with community.
· Attend staff meetings and other service-learning related events.
5 hours per week will be spent on member development (member development conferences and related training)
10 hours per week will be spent working with the Center for Service-Learning. The ACM member will focus on the following areas:
· Strengthen relationships between the Center for Service-Learning and student-directed service-learning tutoring programs (NAMP, LINK, HASTA).
· Work with Student Fellow to assist with pre-literacy scholarship program and Martin Luther King Jr. Project.
· Attend staff meetings, staff service-learning projects and 1-2 hours office coverage.
We are looking for someone committed to youth; preferably with experience working with Native American youth.
Start Date: September 1, 2000
End Date: July 31, 2001
Educational Award: $4,725, awarded after 11 months of service and a minimum of 1,700 hours
Monthly Stipend During Service: $750/month, + health care and a childcare allowance.
