Americorps * VISTA Job Description
Position is a full-time, one-year commitment.
Arizona State University's Service Learning Program is developing programming in three areas at Sunland Elementary School in partnership with the City of Phoenix, the Roosevelt School District, and a private donor. We have three positions available for Americorps* VISTA volunteers.
1. A VISTA member for Science Education will coordinate science-related activities at Sunland School. The Science VISTA will be responsible for planning and implementing a learning garden at Sunland School that will provide the opportunity to improve science literacy to students and a site for families to increase their self-sufficiency by learning to grow their own food.
2. The VISTA member for Adult and Family Literacy will work in the bilingual community to develop support services for the program and facilitate parent participation. The VISTA will pilot an America Reads Family Literacy program that will provide one-on-one tutoring.
3. The VISTA member for Parent Support and Skills Development will offer a variety of life-skills, mental health, and educational programs for parents, such as family conflict resolution, anger management, setting goals, basic nutrition, and budgeting. The VISTA will offer programs that will enhance parents' abilities as their children's first teachers and programming that will assist parents to become self-sufficient, such as English-as-Second Language training, literacy in English, computer and other job-skills development.
These VISTAs will collaborate to develop these programs and will be supported by resources and staff in The Service Learning Program.
