new service-learning periodical
05 June 2000 16:16 UTC
This week I'd like to feature a new periodical: Campus Compact Reader. It
will be published three times a year by Campus Compact and will focus on
the civic dimensions of service-learning.
You can find more information on the Campus Compact web site
(http://www.compact.org); or you can contact John Saltmarsh
(jsaltmarsh@compact.org) for more information on how to subscribe to this
work.
Volume 1, issue 1 include the following articles:
The Path to a Civil Society Goes Through the University by William Damon
Damon comments on "A Call to Civil Society", a report published
last year
on the threats to civil life today.
The Work of Citizenship and the Problem of Service-Learning by Harry C.
Boyte and James Farr
The authors provide a history of service and citizenship in the US,
highlighting times and efforts that married service and citizenship.
The University as Citizen: Institutional Identity and Social Responsibility
by William M. Sullivan
Sullivan provides a history of the mission of higher education and
illustrates the need for institutes of higher learning to retrench and
refocus their mission to include civic-minded goals.
