SOCIAL SCIENCE SERVICE LEARNING INSTITUTE

Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana have teamed up to offer a Northwest
Regional Institute for faculty in the Social Science Disciplines. This
will be offered on September 19-20, 1997. This is a preliminary notice
to mark your calendar for the upcoming NRCC Integrating Service into
Social Science Curriculum Service Learning Insititute.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND SYLLABI: August 15. Please plan on submitting
papers on service-learning and course syllabi by August 15. More details are
forthcoming.

KEYNOTE PRESENTER Alexander Astin

Dr Astin will present a history and future of assessment as it pertains
to service-learning in the social science disciplines.

Alexander Astin is Allen Murray Cartter Professor of Higher Education at
the University of California, Los Angeles and Director of the Higher
Education Research Institute at UCLA. He has served as Director of
Research for both the American Council on Education and the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation. He is the Founding Director of the
Cooperative Insitutional Reasearch Program, on ongoing national study of
some nine million students, 250,000 faculty and staff, and 1500 higher
education institutions. Dr. Astin has authored 18 books and some 300
other publications in the field of higher education. Major areas of
inquiry include the outcomes of higher education, values in higher
education, institutional quality, institutional leadership, equality of
opportunity and access, assessment and research methodology, citizenship,
and the interface between research and policy.

GOALS OF THE INSTITUTE:

* Creating a critical mass of faculty integrating service into social
science disciplines.

* Strengthening the quality of social science courses.

* Strengthening service-learning in the social sciences through research
and publication.

* Identifying and developing service-learning leaders among faculty in
social science disciplines.

* Provide in-state and out-of-state networking opportunities for faculty
and administrators.

* Develop a discipline specific listserv for social science faculty for
ongoing dialogue and sharing of information.
