Minnesota Youth Engaged in Service (YES) Ambassador
The YES Ambassador program seeks to enhance the community
service and service-learning field by developing leadership in
young people. A community-minded "YES Ambassador" between the
ages of 18 and 25 is sought for the state of Minnesota to
engage young people at schools, colleges and universities in
service and leadership experiences.
The YES Ambassador program is sponsored by the Points of Light
Foundation. The Minnesota YES Ambassador will be co-hosted by
two organizations: The National Youth Leadership Council
(NYLC) and Minnesota Campus Compact (MCC). NYLC, based in St.
Paul, engages young people in communities and schools through
innovation in learning, service, leadership and public policy.
NYLC provides curriculum, resource materials, program
development, training and policy information to teachers,
youth and others nationwide. MCC, based in Minneapolis, is a
coalition of 44 college and university presidents that
encourages student and institutional involvement in community
service. MCC offers training, grants, technical assistance,
and other resources to campus staff, faculty, students and
community leaders throughout Minnesota.
Primary Responsibilities of the YES Ambassador Will Include:
· Train school-aged youth and college and university
students in community service-learning and leadership skills;
· Develop several statewide networks: youth as
trainers, college-age student leaders, national youth peer
consultants, and on-line networks;
· Coordinate a series of youth-led workshops and events
for the National Service-Learning Conference in April, 1998;
· Plan a statewide conference for college student
leaders in service;
· Research models of best practice in fostering learning
through service in higher education;
· Consult with adult individuals and organizations on
how to support youth voice and youth leadership;
· Represent the Points of Light Foundation, NYLC, and
MCC to young people and adults.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
· A vision for how young people can be leaders in their
schools and communities;
· Strong understanding of the role of community
service-learning in schools and/or colleges/universities;
· Experience in training, networking, and public
speaking;
· Excellent interpersonal skills and writing skills;
· Close attention to detail; experience organizing
groups, events, etc.;
· Ability to work independently and work well with
diverse groups, including groups of youth.
Young people between 18 and 25 years old are eligible to
apply. College degree preferred. The Ambassador will receive
numerous training and professional development opportunities.
Extensive travel in Minnesota and the U.S. is required --
valid drivers license and access to a car are necessary. This
is a one year commitment beginning September 15, 1997. Annual
salary is $20,000 and includes benefits.
