Glen-- I completed a master's thesis on service-learning and cognitive
growth last year. I was in a similar Student Personnel program at Virginia
Tech (so you should be able to receive a copy through inter-library loan).
I wasn't sure from your message if you were looking for qualitative or
quantitative assessments of sl. My study was almost entirely quantitative.
I used the Scale of Intellectual Development to assess cognitive growth
among sl and non-sl students in four sociology courses. If you would like a
copy and cannot get it through inter-library loan, let me know and I can
send you one. I'm sure you're already aware of these, but if not, other
quantitative studies include:
Boss, J. (1994). The effect of community service ont eh moral development
of college ethics studnets. Journal of Moral Education, 23 (2), 183-198.
Cohen, J., & Kinsey, D. (1994). "Doing good" and scholarship: A
service-learning study. Journalism Educator, 48 (4), 4-14.
Giles, D. E., & Eyler, J. (1994). The impacdt of a college community
service laboratory on students' personal, social, and cognitive outcomes.
Journal of Adolescence, 17, 327-339.
Jordan, K. L. (1994). The relationship of service learning and college
student development. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA.
Markus, G. B., Howardm, J. P.F., & King, D. C. (1993). Integrating
community service and classroom instruction enhances learning: Results from
one experiment. Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 15 (4), 410-419.
Finally, I am working with a Communications professor on an assessment of
service-learning and social responsibility using Cindy Olney's and Steve
Grande's instrument. This two will be a quantitative pre/post study. We
will be assessing the development of social responsibility among sl and
non-sl students at five institutions in Virginia. We're just beginning so
results won't be in until next spring, but I'd be happy to share those with
you.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck with your research! Let me know if I can
be of further assistance. Marci
ps- Be sure to check out the Sl website (University of Colorado). I
believe it has an extensive bibliography on service-learning/ research. :) mb
