Executive Director
LEAP
(Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership, Inc.)
Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP) is an award
winning nationally recognized youth development non-profit which supports
the year round academic enrichment and social development of 7 to 14 year
old children living in very low income neighborhoods in New Haven,
Hartford and New London, Connecticut. LEAP's $3.5 million annual budget
is supported by the Corporation for National Service (AmeriCorps), the
State of Connecticut, and private individuals, foundations and
corporations. LEAP's principal objectives are five-fold:
* To improve the academic success and social competencies of its
over 1000 participating children;
* To involve children and families in positive community activities
that increase parental involvement and encourage high levels of
interaction between children's parents and teachers;
* To develop over 200 college and high school students to be leaders
and organizers in their communities and to act as counselors for
neighborhood children;
* To improve staff and counselor knowledge in child development, and
teaching, as well as improve counselor and staff understanding of the
social issues affecting inner-city communities; and,
* To offer counselors encouragement and support to complete high
school and pursue advanced education or careers.
Responsibilities of the Executive Director:
Coordinate and manage all operations of LEAP, an organization with over
40
full time and 200 part-time staff. Duties include, but are not limited
to: supervising senior management team staff; overseeing organization
wide
fiscal plan; implementing fundraising strategies with Board of Directors
and Development staff; maintaining community as well as local, state-wide
and national political relationships; setting organization policy with
the
Board of Directors; maintaining positive media contact; mentoring staff
members; and developing youth.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor's and/or a Master's level
degree in education, urban policy, administration, or a related field
plus
significant work experience in a related field. The successful candidate
will be highly motivated, creative, mature, energetic, and have strong
interpersonal, organizational, staff management, financial management and
communication skills. The candidate must possess initiative and a
willingness to work collaboratively with others. Experience with
children's organizations, community organizing and local politics
strongly
preferred. Most importantly, the successful candidate must have a strong
commitment to improving the lives of Connecticut's urban children and
embrace LEAP's vision of accomplishing this through developing young
community leaders.
