Anne,
we had a FIPSE grant to collaborate with departments to integrate
service learning into the curriculum in which undergraduates played a key
role. With support from Carlson Center staff, a student majoring in the
target department worked with faculty and community-based organizations to
develop service learning opportunities for students. While these student
coordinators did not work entirely on their own, they assumed substantial
responsibility and did excellent work. In addition to being majors and
outstanding students in the target departments, these students
demonstrated the ability to think about curricular issues and to think
about teaching/learning from the perspective of the learner. I highly
recommend involving students as long as you provide ongoing support for
thinking about pedagogy. If you'd like more information please feel
free to contact me. Best wishes with your program, and let us know how
it goes.
