"Articles AGAINST service-learning" is a pretty broad (or is it narrow)
description. Maybe what Deanna's student can do is to look at papers
which have begun to consider the debates WITHIN service learning as
the practice has matured. These discussions do not necessarily espouse
service learning for everyone. One approach is through questions of
higher education's mission generally; Cohen's article "Matching University
Mission With Service Motivation" touches on this. Another approach
relates to which mission service learning "ought" to address: charity?
social justice? (See Keith Morton's article on "The Irony of Service.")
Also, there is a lively conversation on the service-learning archives
which dealt with whether or not to allow students to choose controversial
causes for their service experience (KKK meetings, for example), and there
have been similar conversations on the archives about whether or not to
require service or make it optional. I guess it depends on his definition
of "involuntary servitude."
