With a phrase like "involuntary servitude" he should check out what the
followers of the teachings of Ayn Rand have to say about service. On occasion
they've equated it not only with involuntary servitude but with Nazism. I
think they have a web page.
Is the debate more about mandatory service requirements or simply
service-learning? Probably the biggest obstacle to the spread of
service-learning is not so much outright opposition as it is indifference,
laziness, or ignorance of the value of s-l on the part of faculty. Some
faculty may not see how it can be academically relevant to their course
objectives.
