FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COOL Student Volunteers to Gather at University of South Carolina
The Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL) has announced that the 1998
National Conference on Student Community Service will be hosted by the
University of South Carolina in Columbia on March 12-15, 1998. The COOL
Conference is a comprehensive overview of student community service as
presented by the students. The 1998 Conference, titled United We Serve,
will focus on the unique ability of service to bring people together. COOL
expects over 2,000 students to attend this conference.
The COOL National Conference is the premier gathering of college students
who are active in community service. COOL provides students with a forum
to meet, exchange ideas, and voice their thoughts on the work they are
doing in their communities. Each year the COOL Conference draws thousands
of idealistic young people dedicated to serving their communities and
creating social change. The excitement created by such a committed group
of people is electric.
Students, faculty and professionals from across the country attend this
educational conference designed to increase student leadership and
effectiveness in campus community service. Participants will attend
workshops presented by their peers, community leaders and nonprofit
professionals. Together they will discuss their work, the challenges they
face, and the vision they share for a better world.
COOL and USC plan on using this national gathering to focus attention on
the important work allready being done by volunteers in the Carolinas. The
COOL Conference will increase communication and encourage state-wide
cooperation among community service groups.
In response to the America Reads initiative COOL is cooperating with the
Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE) to host a
literacy pre-conference and to strengthen the literacy workshops at the
1998 COOL Conference. This collaboration combines the comprehensive nature
of the COOL conference and the literacy expertise of SCALE to provide a
complete view of literacy activism today, in addition to the standard COOL
program.
COOL is a national nonprofit that works with college students to start,
strengthen and expand their community service programs. Founded in 1984
and directed by recent college graduates, our mission is to educate and
empower college students to strengthen our nation through quality community
service.
Quality community service should challenge students to educate themselves
about the issues surrounding their involvement so they might better
understand and work and work with communities. Each effort must be
designed with the intent of creating long term solutions while ensuring
independence, mutual education, dignity, and respect for all.
