Thank you for your interest in the America Reads Challenge. As of
June 1997, more than 425 institutions have signed onto the America
Reads Challenge by committing an increased number of Federal
Work-Study (FWS) students to tutor children to read.

We are pleased to announce four regional workshops this summer to
provide training and technical assistance to your institution as you

move forward with the America Reads Challenge. These free, one-day
workshops will be presented by the U.S. Department of Education, the

Corporation for National Service, Laubach Literacy Action, Literacy
Volunteers of America, Student Coalition for Action in Literacy
Education, and Edward McDermott, director of the FWS program at
Georgetown University.

The workshops are designed to give participants a basic foundation
for
managing an America Reads Challenge FWS program. Topics include 1)
the components and principles of managing an effective literacy
program including training, tutor support, program evaluation, and
partnership management, 2) model programs, and 3) resources
available
in the national literacy network. Participants will also have the
opportunity to network with others doing similar work.

The following workshops will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

(Workshop locations were determined based on the number of
institutions signed onto the America Reads Challenge in each state
and
region.)

July 23 San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA
July 28 Chicago State University, Chicago, IL
July 30 University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
August 4 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel
Hill, NC

Creating a literacy program requires the coordinated efforts of many

offices within an institution. Please forward this invitation to
colleagues on your campus who are interested in implementing the
America Reads Challenge, including those in the college of education

and the offices of community service, service-learning, student
employment, and financial aid.

All institutions are invited to attend the workshops, but, as space
is
limited, those who have signed onto the America Reads Challenge will

receive priority if workshops reach capacity. Please e-mail the
attached form by the registration deadline, July 14, 1997, to:
Courtney_Reeve@ed.gov.
For more information, you may contact Courtney Reeve of the U.S.
Department of Education at the above address.

PLEASE DO NOT POST QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS TO THE LISTSERV.

Again, thank you for your interest to the America Reads Challenge.
We
look forward to hearing from you.
