Service-learning and diverse populations.
31 July 2002 21:46 UTC
The AHDP is a 30 year old intergenerational, service-learning health
promotion program. It is an academic course, and partially self
supporting volunteer program that has spread to several other colleges
and universities.
I want to commend Linda Cieslik, director of the AHDP at UW at Milwaukee
for fine job in recruitng a substantial number of disabled American
veterans to participate in her program.Sshe has worked long and hard at
this project. Congratulations, Linda, your work is appreciated.
Here at the UMaryland, we are holding discussions with the Soldiers and
Airmens Home to have some of their DAVs join our other members including
our "resident" DAVs group from the VA Nursing Home in D. C. this
semester. Also working on recruting more older adults who are
developmentally challenged. Have initiated efforts to recruit more
people with Alzheimer's Disease and their caregivers.
We expect about 60-70 older adults ("members"), a similar number of
students and volunteers with whom they will be matched (called
"staffers"), and about 20 senior staffers who supervise the staffers.
We have also developed a Working Group akin to our former Board of
Advisors. Tasks include fund raising, organizing our 30th anniversary
celebration (to be held in May 2003), marketing and outreach to various
organizations, etc.
Also, this summer, a group of MBA students are developing a business
plan to present to corporations and others possible funders or sponsors.
Their goal is to obtain consistent and sustainable funding. Love them.
Dan
