The Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism at Our Lady of the Lake
University currently seeks qualified candidates for the position of
Assistant Director of Service-Learning and Volunteerism (Assistant Director

Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of SL&V is responsible for designing and implementing
student leadership activities through civic engagement, as well as the
coordination of community volunteer efforts for University constituents.  

Internally, the Assistant Director of SL&V advises two student
organizations, serves as a formal liaison with the Division of Student Life
(i.e. weekly attendance at the Student Life Directors Meeting), works
closely with Campus Activities to monitor the service activities of
Recognized Student Organizations and with the direction from the Director of
the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism, oversees and manages the
daily operations of the Center.   This includes coordinator of two
AmeriCorps*VISTA members, 30 off-campus student employees and 3 additional
student workers.  Externally, the position serves as a liaison for Center
activities.  In this role, the Assistant Director of SL&V promotes and
maintains effective relationships between OLLU and the Community.

Essential Functions:
1.      Coordinates and implements a comprehensive civic leadership
development program, including advising the vOLLUnteer Unity Council and
managing the OLLU Serves program.
2.      Develops reviews, interprets and enforces institutional policies
related to service activities, in coordination with the Center Director and
Campus Activities.
3.      Promotes effective relationships between OLLU and community
organizations/agencies and schools to by serving as liaison for Center
activities.
4.      Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates community service
strategies and activities.
5.      Coordinates all University volunteer efforts.
6.      Monitors and coordinates community service efforts of recognized
student organizations.
7.      Recruits, hires, schedules, trains and evaluates student employees,
in coordination with Student Employment.
8.      Monitors and maintains statistics and prepares reports on service
learning/volunteerism involvement by University members.
9.      Establishes and monitors a clearinghouse of Center and community
resources.
10.     Supervises two AmeriCorps*VISTA members in the development and
institutionalization of the vOLLUnteer Unity Council and the OLLU Serves
program.

Additional Responsibilities:
1.      Participates in Division of Student Life activities and programs as
requested and assigned.
2.      Maintains inventory of equipment, materials and supplies for the
Center.
3.      Maintains Center web pages.
4.      Assists in developing literature that will promote the programs and
services of the Center.
5.      Addresses safety and risk management measures appropriate to
programs supervised.
6.      Other related duties as assigned by the Director of the Center for
Service-Learning and Volunteerism.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
1.      Knowledge of and experience with personal computers.
2.      Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication
skills.
3.      Optimistic, creative, and energetic leadership style including the
ability to delegate responsibility, stimulate enterprising activity and
utilize a student development model which empowers, supports and maintains
accountability.
4.      Good organizational skills and sound judgment.
5.      Proficiency in training, group facilitation, programming and public
presentation.
6.      Excellent organization skills; ability to develop and coordinate
multi-task projects with attention to detail.
7.      Ability to work effectively with college students, faculty and staff
in a culturally diverse metropolitan University.
8.      Ability to adjust to unusual hours of work and a willingness and
interest in devoting time on weekends and evenings, when appropriate and
necessary. 

Education and experience:
1.      Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience in community involvement
and/or student development activities required, master's degree preferred.
2.      Master's degree may substitute two years of experience.
3.      Substantial community relations experience, preferably in San
Antonio.
4.      Familiarity with service-learning, and / or student development
principles and practices.
5.      Personal history of volunteer experience preferred.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV), an academic unit of
the Worden School of Social Service, was established at the University in
1997.  CSLV exists to promote student success and personal development by
cultivating meaningful service-learning partnerships between students,
faculty and the community, primarily San Antonio's West Side.  The Center
for Service-Learning and Volunteerism is uniquely positioned to serve both
its community and students. 

As a member of San Antonio's West Side, the University adjoins some of the
poorest census tracts in Texas.  The Center for Service-Learning and
Volunteerism strives to increase the number of effective partnerships
between service agencies on San Antonio's West Side, and members of OLLU.
It increases civic engagement among students by facilitating access to
community strengthening activities and enabling them to address the needs of
the local low-income population.
