If you don't mind me going piggy back on Francis' questions-- We are going
through a similar research process at our institution.
We at California Baptist University are looking at designing some programs
related to a community service requirement, service-learning, and
co-curricular transcripts. Any information you can provide will help us
make decisions in shaping or programs. Thank you for your time.

1. What is your traditional student enrollment?
2. How many staff do you use to coordinate service-learning programs, track
the community service requirement and/or co-curricular transcripts?
3. For those staff members who coordinate these programs, is this their
primary or secondary responsibility? (If secondary, what is their primary
responsibility?)
4. What is the organizational structure of your department?
5. On which side of the institution are you housed (Academic/Student
Affairs)?
6. What have been the pros and cons to where your department has been
placed? (Do you have different departments that work with service-learning,
community service requirements and/or co-curricular transcripts?)
7. What is the operating budget for running the service-learning, community
service requirement and/or co-curricular transcript programs.
8. Where do you get your funding (hard or soft money?)
9. How are community service hours that are required for graduation
connected to hours in which students invest in service-learning programs?
10. Can community service hours that are connected to service-learning
courses be applied to a co-curricular transcript. (If not, how do you note
credit for service-learning - ie. Designation on Academic Transcript, Fourth
Credit option?)

Thank you for your time and consideration of our request for information.
Sincerely,

Subject: SL Center Start Up Funding

Hi All--

I am in the process of writing a proposal to create a service-learning
center at my university. This proposal will then be turned over to our
development office to seek seed money. We already have a service-learniong
program in place, but believe that now it is the time to create a center to
better leverage our resources to help the communities we serve. I was
wondering if folks at colleges and universities with sl centers, or the
equivalent, could help me out with the following questions.

Seed funding. Where did your money come from to fund start-up?
Endowment. Do you have an endowment? How was that endowment created? Is
the endowment used for staff salaries? programs? Etc?
Institutional Support. How much internal financial support did you
   receive?
