Transportation Request
23 July 2002 18:34 UTC
Dear All: I believe I have sent this out a few times. I personally have
not received it as part of this list Dear Colleagues: This message is
specifically intended for institutions
with 2500 or fewer students.
My institution is a small liberal arts college in the Northeast. We
have been in the "serious" business of service learning for two years. By
serious I mean that we have a growing number of courses designated as
service learning, over 22% of our faculty are engaged in service learning,
student surveys consistently demonstrate the utility of the pedagogy and
interest in more opportunities, developing "consistent" partnering
relationships ---
The purpose of this email is to ask for your advice. Since we are a
small institution, we do not have significant resources for transportation.
We have a few 15 passenger vans and a few cars. Generally these are used
for athletic competitions and transporting students to appointments of one
sort or another. We are located 8 miles from the city of Wilkes Barre.
Public transportation is limited. We are in the process of trying to meet
the transportation needs of our students in service learning. Can anyone
offer advice or procedures for transportation? Specifically, here are a few
of my questions: Do you transport students to service sites? If so, do you
use vans? cars? Do you lease? Or did you purchase the vehicles? Who drives
the vans/cars? If students do, do you provide any type of training? Are
there other things that we should be thinking about? We believe we will
need to move approximately 60-100 students per semester. Freshmen are not
allowed to have cars on campus and approximately 45% of our students are
commuters who are more than willing to share their vehicles when it is
convenient. Any information you can give me will be a great help. Thanks
in advance. Helen
so I am going to try it one more time. If you have received it before -
more than once - I especially apologize. IF you haven't received it, maybe
you can help.
