Re: Enticing Article for New Faculty?

Hi Lydia,
Just a couple of thoughts:

1) faculty from different disciplines are going to find there way
into SL in ways that make cognitive and professional sense to them
from the perspective of their discipline. I'm not sure that a one
size fits all approach will work well. One publication that speaks
to these multiple perspectives in Rick Battistoni's Civic Engagement
Across the Curriculum: A Resource Book for Service-Learning Faculty
in all Disciplines (Campus Compact, 2001).

2) My experience is that it is unrealistic to encourage faculty to
revise a course for the fall when they return to campus in September.
They should begin that process after the Spring semester since the
revision includes work on partnerships and the inclusion of community
partners in the design of the course and that is not something that
can be done in a matter of days. Additionally, reflective exercises
need to be carefully designed to link the course content to the
service work in the community. To suggest to faculty that they can
immediately turn their course into a SL course would perhaps send the
wrong message that they should simply add community service activity
to their existing course and call it service-learning.

Some excellent curriculum revision resources are the book by Kerri
Heffernan, Fundamentals of SL Course Construction (Campus Compact,
1999) and the Service-Learning Course Design Workbook put out by the
Michigan Journal for Community Service-Learning (2001).

Thanks,
John
