Re: Service Learning

Hello Doria and all on the service-learning listserve,
I am really intrigued by the notion that what might also be a
dimension to faculty resistance for service-learning is an
unwillingness to get involved with the 'other.'
This never really occurred to me, and its like a gush of wind has
just hit me. I would be interested in hearing more.
I would be very interested in hearing about your model for community
interaction at Stellenbosch Doria, and also would appreciate a copy
of your paper.
I will commencing research on service-learning this fall and will be
using critical race theory as conceptual framework. I have not come
across any literature on critical race approaches to
service-learning, but have with regards to social justice approaches.
One resource I have found helpful is a book edited by O'Grady
"Intergrating Service Learning with Multicultural Education in
Colleges and Universities" (2000), and of course Delgardo and
Stefancic's book on Critical Race Theory.
I plan to work with communities in Vancouver, British Columbia, and
hope to develop a community driven model for institutional/community
partnerships that would foster citizenship from a critical race
perspective.
Any suggestions or assistance from anyone on the listserve would be
much appreciated.
Begum
