JOB ANNOUNCEMNT - ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT The East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC) Charter School was created out of the belief that public schools must prepare children for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of life in a democratic, pluralistic society. Through service-learning, the curriculum and culture of the school will integrate service, spiritual development and creative expression across a full range of academic subjects. By engaging students in meaningful service as part of the school’s routine and in the larger community, we will prepare them to become enlightened citizens and stewards of the community and environment. The
EBCC is building a school culture founded not only on serious scholarship but
also on artistic expression within the context of the civic, moral and spiritual
development of students. In
September 2001, we will welcome the first primary students to our charter school
in Oakland, California. In
partnership with the community, we are creating a new model for schools – one
that prepares students to enter adulthood as thoughtful, compassionate and
engaged citizens. The EBCC Charter School is
seeking a part-time Administrative Assistant to provide support to the Head
of Elementary School and the EBCC Charter School. This individual must 1) have
previous experience working in public school or nonprofit in equivalent position
and 2) possess initiative, discretion and independent judgment.
Specific responsibilities
include: Manages calendar and
independently schedules appointments for Head of Elementary
School. Screens incoming calls and
correspondence and responds independently when possible. Handles interactions with
parents and students before, during and after school. Prepares and writes routine
reports, internal memorandums and external correspondence. Provides overall
administrative support to school staff including managing student files, report
cards and assessment. Arranges programs, events or
conferences including issuing information or invitations, coordinating speakers,
securing facilities and catering services and controlling event
budget. Keeps Head of the Elementary
School advised of time sensitive and priority issues. Possesses the ability to
handle multiple tasks at one time and to interpret a variety of instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Whenever necessary, serves
as recorder of important meetings and prepares minutes, agendas and meeting
packages in a timely manner. Greets scheduled visitors
and directs them to appropriate area or person. Develops a sense of
community while respecting and responding appropriately to the strengths and
needs of staff. Understands the mission and
guiding principles of the EBCC Charter School and puts these into practice in
all school related activities. Works cooperatively with
staff/faculty to ensure the implementation of the EBCC Charter School
mission. Shows initiative in sharing
ideas with other faculty members and incorporates ideas from into job
responsibilities. Contributes to the
development of a school wide "ethic of critical inquiry" through actively
participating in school-based research and evaluation activities focused on
improving practice. The
successful candidate will have the following: Minimum two years college,
with B.A. preferred; and three to five years experience in school or nonprofit
organization with two years in a high level administrative, professional
capacity; or equivalent combination of education and
experience. California Driver's License
with a clean DMV printout. Ability to successfully pass
state and federal background checks. Ability to obtain First
Aid/CPR Certification.
Experience working in
elementary school environment with strong management
skills. Excellent written and verbal
communication skills. Ability to 1) work
independently with minimal supervision and 2) to organize and prioritize work
assignments. Computer experience
including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and comfortable acquiring new
technology skills. Working knowledge of
Spanish, Cantonese or Vietnamese appreciated. Excited about learning and
engaging children in learning. Passion for working with
students from urban communities, with an excitement for working students and
parents from all backgrounds. Enthusiasm and commitment to
participating in a cooperative effort to launch elementary level of EBCC Charter
School, with commitment to the vision, mission and guiding principles of the
EBCC Charter School. Dedication to working
closely and cooperatively in a community-based organization with diverse staff,
students, families and partnerships. Ability to provide
leadership and serve as a mentor. Sense of humor, high ethical
professional standards, multi-cultural perspective and deep enjoyment of
children. Flexible and adaptable to
change with the necessary skills to work in a creative and demanding learning
environment including the ability to problem-solve and manage ambiguity and
adversity. This position is
part-time. Salary: $12.01 --
$16.82/hour
