Service-Learning Supporters
Advocacy at local, state and national levels is essential to sustain
service-learning. Yet effective advocates need to know who they should
contact, with what messages, when, etc.
Therefore, we are pleased to say that the National Service-Learning
Partnership has newly created the Service-Learning Advocacy Listserve as a
nationwide forum for information, resources, opinions, concerns, and
advocacy tips to successfully communicating about service-learning with
groups and individuals who can influence policy at all levels.
Why one more listserv? Because it receives no government funds, the new
listserve may offer an unfettered forum to discuss advocacy issues. To
learn more, see below.

Start a discussion, or participate in one. Forward an interesting article
on service-learning that has implications for advocacy. Seek advice and
problem-solve with peers around issues and challenges affecting
service-learning in K-12 education.
Funding for your school depends on what happens in Washington DC within the
next month. There could not be a better time to join.
WHAT IS THE SERVICE-LEARNING ADVOCACY LISTSERV?
The [sl_advocacy] listserv provides a nationwide forum for sharing
information, resources, opinions, concerns, and advocacy tips for
successfully communicating about service-learning with groups and
individuals who can influence policy at the federal, state and local
levels.
The National Service-Learning Partnership has formed this listserv out of
several earlier efforts by merging its national network of congressional
liaisons with similar lists from a number of member organizations. The
[sl_advocacy] listserv should complement existing listservs as a forum to
continue in-depth conversations about policy/advocacy that have emerged
elsewhere.
WHO IS THE MODERATOR?
The [sl_advocacy] listserv is moderated by Sarah Pearson, a
service-learning expert at the American Youth Policy Forum. She is the
author of "Finding Common Ground: Service-Learning and School Reform," a
study and assessment of 28 leading school reform models and their
compatibility with service-learning.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT THE MODERATOR TO DO?
The moderator will introduce discussion topics to the list that will be of
interest and keep alert to topics raised by other subscribers that warrant
formal discussion or action.
The moderator is also responsible for maintaining constructive discussion
via the list. Emotions and disagreements are not always bad, but they
should be carefully monitored. Here's a good rule of thumb: don't fear
controversy, but practice civility. Adults should know the difference
between attacking an idea and attacking the person who presented it.
JOIN THE NATIONAL SERVICE-LEARNING PARTNERSHIP
You do not have to be a member of the National Service-Learning Partnership
