13th Annual National Service-Learning Conference Preconferences There are 14 preconferences scheduled for the 2002 National Service-Learning Conference in Seattle, Washington Wednesday March 20. The following highlight two of the preconferences, we will highlight others during the next two weeks. Please consider participating in one of these workshops and share this information with colleagues. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS This six –hour preconference will explore how service-learning can explicitly support multicultural and interracial understanding as a central component of engaged citizenship. Dr. Robert Franco, Kapi’olani Community College in Hawaii, will facilitate the preconference and has engaged in service-learning and diversity in K-12 and higher education systems as well as community settings. Participants will examine “diversity and common ground”; what
connects and disconnects us; what the 2000 census show (beyond one race); how to
affirm identity, build community and create leaders; and how service-learning
offers strong evidence of positive multicultural outcomes. BUILDING EFFECTIVE
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS FOR SERVICE-LEARNING FROM THE COMMUNITY
PERSPECTIVE This four-hour
preconference focuses on the key role of community-based organizations in the
K-12 service-learning partnership.
To date, almost all of the research, scholarship, and “best practices”
material dealing with service-learning focuses on the role of the school. There is a significant lack of similarly
helpful material for community organizations or agencies who are approached as
potential service-learning partners, or who may even want to initiate a
relationship with the school. Susan Abravanel, SOLV Education Coordinator with more than nineteen years of experience with educational planning and curriculum development, non-profit organizational program development and implementation, conference and event planning, coordination of volunteers, political advocacy and consensus building in both professional and volunteer community leadership positions and Kate McPherson, Project Service Leadership with more than 15 years experience designing, implementing and assisting service-learning programs and projects, will co-facilitate the preconference that will provide participants with:
The preconference is appropriate for teachers, school leaders and staff, students and community agencies – and will provide answers to the following: What does the organization need to know about service-learning? What does the organization need to communicate to the school? What will the organization need to do internally in order to become an effective partner in service-learning? “Best practices”
examples will be interspersed as appropriate with consideration of the questions
raised above, and will include discussion of how the organization or agency
worked through the particular question in the process of becoming an effective
