Readings for Reflection with High School Students
11 January 2002 22:45 UTC
Hello:
Many thanks to those who responded to my request. Here are the suggestions:
The Service-Learning Reader: Reflections and and Perspectives on Service.
Edited by Gail Albert and the Staff of the Center of Service-Learning,
University of Vermont. 1994 Published by the National Society for
Experiential Education, 3509 Haworth Dr., Suite 207 Raleigh, N.C.
27609-7229 phone: 919-787-3263
My endorsement is appropriate for both college and high school. It is
Building Bridges (the Allyn & Bacon Student Guide to Service-Learning) by
Doris M. Hamner (2002 - ISBN 0-205-31974-2). This book hits on much more
than just reflection. "Reflection" in this book refers primarily to the act
of observing and writing (journaling or papers).
Hey Rob. Try Stone Soup for the World and Stone Soup for the World Leader's
Guide. We did a trial run of the resource for the author, Marianne Larned.
The book is filled with first hand accounts and stories from individuals
that have been impacted by service experiences. The leader's guide has
reflection activities for each of the stories in the book. Many of our
YMCAs have found it helpful. I think you can get it from any bookstore
(probably need to order it). It was produced by Canary Press. Let me know
if you have trouble getting it.
Depending on how you'd use it, The Call of Service: A Witness to Idealism
by Robert Coles might work for you. The literary and historical allusions
might prevent the average high school student from reading the entire book
by him/herself, but a discussion facilitator could easily excerpt stories or
whole chapters to share with a group.
Paul Loeb' SOUL OF A CITIZEN works well with older teens.
