Nationally, numerous assessments have shown that service-learning is a powerful
tool in helping students challenge prejudice and reduce negative stereotypes in
relation to age, disability, class, ethnicity, race, national origin, religion
and sexual orientation. This pre-conference will focus on specific
service-learning and diversity strategies developed at community colleges and
universities. Faculty and community perspectives will be presented through
interactive classroom exercises. Topics will include honoring indigenous and
multicultural traditions of service, intercultural, interclass and
intergenerational service-learning. Additional topics to be covered are using
on-line instruction to complement community based service, reflection and
assessment strategies specific to service-learning and respecting differences.
