Dear Service-Learning Colleagues,

Michael Verchot, a colleague of mine in the UW School of Business is
interested in learning about successful strategies for revitalizing
communities that surround colleges and universities. See his question
below. Please respond to him directly at mverchot@u.washington.edu He
has agreed to share a summary of his responses with us. Thanks,

Sarena

Here in Seattle the small business community that surrounds the University
of Washington has been struggling for a number of years with business
closures and a decreasing diversity of stores (i.e. an increasing
concentration of fast food places and used book/clothing stores). While the
situation is starting to improve, there is much work to be done. I have been
invited by the local Chamber of Commerce to report on successful strategies
other "university districts" have employed to build a vibrant community.

If you have strategies, stories, or anecdotes to share, all are appreciated.

Michael Verchot
