Dear Colleagues:

Here are details about the National Gathering this June.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS

INVISIBLE COLLEGE
COLLEGE EDUCATORS AND SERVICE LEARNING:
3rd NATIONAL GATHERING

"Community Service and Academic Study: So What? Now What?"

June 19-22, 1997
University of Denver
Denver, Colorado

Invisible College Mission Statement

"The Invisible College, an expanding circle of educators, fosters and
promotes community service learning as an effective educational tool. The
Invisible College recognizes the transforming power of service learning to
involve the academy as a responsible and inclusive member of the diverse
community."

We would like to invite you to participate in the Third Annual National
Gathering of the Invisible College, a national group of educators dedicated
to sharing knowledge about service learning. As the service-learning
movement continues to grow, many
educators are discovering that connecting service with academic study raises
important issues regarding the roles and responsibilities of colleges and
universities. To help address these issues, the Third Annual National
Gathering has been convened as a site for deep reflection and ground
breaking discussion on service learning.

This third annual gathering is co-sponsored by the Invisible College and the
Colorado Campus Compact. The National Gathering will be convened at the
University of Denver Thursday, June 19 - Sunday , June 22.

Unlike other kinds of academic conferences or professional meetings, the
Gathering will center around extended time for intensional conversations
about the issues of most concern to participants. Conference planners will
build the agenda for Gathering sessions around your needs and concerns.

We ask each of you to prepare a short (2-3 page) "position paper" telling us
about your current thoughts and feelings regarding service-learning. What
issues most concern you? What would you like to hear more about? What
topics of discussion would you be interested in? We will use these position
papers to set up work groups, encourage group members to share ideas
electronically
before the gathering, and build our work at the gathering around these
pre-Gathering conversations. We invite contributions that focus on
clarifying and defining our visions of educational institutions' role in
educating students and serving society as a host of political, social,
cultural, and economic forces sweep us toward a new millennium.

In addition, we will provide an opportunity at the Gathering to "showcase"
programs, resources, and materials which participants wish to share with
others. If you are interested in participating in a Showcase session,
please prepare a one-page outline of a resource room display or "poster"
for inclusion in a session.
Please note if video or other a-v equipment will be needed.

Position papers may be submitted electronically (e-mail - ic@sba.pdx.edu)
and via ground mail.
