The University of Minnesota's Office for Special Learning
Opportunities coordinates community service learning
opportunities for U of MN students. The University is
collaborating with a local high school to offer tutoring
for Somali students.
Assignment description: -------------------------------------
The VISTA will create and coordinate tools and processes to
match volunteer tutors with Somali high school students to
prepare them for college, hone study skills and explore
career options. The VISTA will recruit tutors and students,
establish a record keeping and recognition system for
volunteers, assist in curriculum development and develop
materials to represent the program to the community.
Desired skills and experience: -----------------------------
Required skills: strong writing, computer, phone, inter-
personal, organizational and management skills.
Preferred: Knowledge of or experience working directly with
English as a second language. Also helpful are experiences
in the areas of volunteer recruitment and support, publicity
and education. Experience with culturally diverse
populations is also sought.

This VISTA assignment is in a rural area. Some travel is
required (bus or car).

Since 1964, VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) has placed
over 100,000 national service workers at agencies throughout
the United States to help find community-based solutions to
the root causes of poverty. Now part of the AmeriCorps program,
VISTA provides its volunteers with a subsistence allowance (slightly
above poverty level),health insurance, and a $4725 education voucher.
This VISTA assignment was distributed through VISTA Link

recruitment system designed to assist local VISTA Sponsors
attract qualified applicants nationwide. VISTA Link has
been created and is maintained pro-bono by a former VISTA,
