Transportation

Hello,
I'd like to open a discussion on the issue of transportation.
I coordinate a community-service project for first-year students
who are participating in a pilot program here at the University
at ALbany. One of the major issues for me is transportation.

At this university first-year students are not allowed to have a car.
In addition, the school is discontinuing its motor pool so we don't have access
to vans or cars for transporting students to off-campus sites.

To our advantage, there are two campuses and a bus runs between them. We
are in the capital of New York and there are many organizations near the
school's busline but there are many organizations we would like to include
in our program that aren't on this busline.

We looked into renting vehicles but found the cost prohibitive.

I'm wondering how people deal with this issue. How do service-learning
programs help students get into the community?

I'm looking forward to your replies.
