Special AmeriCorps Opportunity

The Corporation for National Service has created a special program through
which applicants could apply for AmeriCorps Education Awards Only. Actually,
the awards can come with up to $ 1,000 per member to cover administrative
costs. The funds and the competition are totally separate from the regular
AmeriCorps granting process. They've also streamlined both the application
as well as the reporting requirements for this stream of funding. It's an
incredible opportunity especially for colleges and universities that may be
more likely to have all the other programmatic costs covered through other
resources.

One reason why I bring this up is due to the discussion we've been having
about models. For example, a campus might apply for AmeriCorps Education
Awards for all the student project coordinators within their Coalition of
Projects Model. Two major emphases of AmeriCorps are working with children,
especially helping children (K-3) learn to read, and "volunteer generator"
activity. Students serving as project coordinators and leading other
students into service is a great fit for AmeriCorps.

Of course, it certainly would not be limited to Coalition of Projects type
programs. (Although in my opinion it's an incredible fit.) This may also work
for graduate assistants working with professors to lead and support students
in service-learning courses.

The next deadline is coming up soon, February 28. The one after that is June
30.
