COMMUNITY SERVICE TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS
BACKGROUND
Phillips Academy, founded in 1778, is an independent,
coeducational, diverse, non-sectarian, non-profit boarding and day school
offering a variety of academic programs for American and international
students in grades 9-12 and post-graduate. Student enrollment is
approximately 1200 with a teaching faculty of more than 200 men and women.
Andover has a tradition of devotion to democratic ideals and seeks to
develop in its students sound personal values as well as scholarship and
creativity.
THE TEACHING FELLOW PROGRAM
At Andover on a Teaching Fellowship, the recent college graduate is
introduced to teaching by immersion in an academic community. In addition
to their primary educational responsibilities, Teaching Fellows participate
in the residential and athletic programs as house counselors and coaches,
and frequently are involved in other student activities. Each Teaching
Fellow is matched with a faculty mentor, and attends Teaching Fellow
seminars, departmental and whole faculty meetings. There are on average
fourteen Teaching Fellows per year. A stipend of $13,5000, medical and
life insurance, housing in a school dormitory or house, and meals in the
school dining hall are provided. Fields open to Teaching Fellows include
arts and humanities, languages, math and sciences, physical education, and,
most recently, Community Service.
TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE
The mission of Phillips Academy's Community Service Program is to
develop partnerships between Phillips Academy and local agencies that meet
critical needs in the community and provide unique educational
opportunities for students and faculty. Programs in Andover, the nearby
city of Lawrence, and other surrounding communities involve youth and
elderly services, housing and hunger, health, political action, recent
immigrants, and special needs populations. The Community Service Office
works with over thirty agencies, involving over 400 students and 20 faculty
members each trimester. Activities include placements in day care centers
and nursing homes, team-based initiatives such as voter registration drives
and theater troupes, one-day service events, and curricular options in
which teachers incorporate service-learning into their classes.
Begun in 1994-95, Teaching Fellowships in Community Service allow
recent college graduates to play a prominent role in running Phillips
Academy's extensive Community Service program. Teaching Fellows serve as
Assistant Directors, coordinating whole sections of the program by working
closely with the Director of Community Service, over thirty student
coordinators, ten members of the faculty advisory board, as well as the
faculty and student volunteers and the agencies with which they work.
There are also opportunities for involvement in the academic program with
instructors who incorporate community work into their classes. Teaching
Fellows in Community Service learn how to teach beyond the scope of the
classroom, coordinate existing programs, strengthen and build ties with the
community, and help determine the future of the program as a whole.

"Our goal should be clear. We are seeking nothing less than a life
surrounded by the richness and diversity of community. A collective life.
A common life. An everyday life. A powerful life that gains its joy from
the creativity and connectedness that come when we join in association to
create an inclusive world."
