John,
I've always appreciated your insights on how we approach and structure our
service efforts, and I think you've come up with an interesting starting
point for discussion here. I imagine most campuses have one or more of
these models in existence in some form. I agree that at this point your
suggested categorization of models is rough. I think that it would be
worthwhile to explore some of the ways these models fit or don't fit with
our existing programs. I also think it is important to add a second issue
to explore: what do we do with campuses in which community service takes
the form of multiple models? (particularly, how do we establish
communication and collaboration among distinctly different programs and
organizations).

On our campus it is difficult to make _distinct_ differentiations between
our programs based on these categorizations. For example, our
"clearinghouse" program, MUCAP, can be characterized as both passive _and_
active. Our active "counseling" work is not as in-depth as your
description. The same can be said for our S-L program.

Programs that fit the Project model could be our Midnight Run meal program,
MAP alternative break program, and possibly Habitat, Best Buddies, Big
Brothers/Big Sisters and SEE (tutoring), but these last four are student
organizations, so possibly should be considered part of the club model.
(Other clubs are Circle K and Gamma Sigma Sigma [community service sorority
colony]).

I have described a number of programs and organizations that are active at
Marquette. These all have very different structures and control that make
it difficult to establish more than a tenuous coalition. MUCAP, S-L,
Midnight Run, and MAP are all university programs that, while
student-staffed, are ultimately under the authority of (and funded by)
various university departments. Student organizations are completely
student-led and student-run. While our Big Brothers/Big Sisters chapter is
a student organization, the BB/BS of Greater Milwaukee has a great deal of
control over the organization.

My questions for others:
*How do your campus programs fit into John's suggested rough categorization?
*By using such categories, what is being left out or de-emphasized (such as
location of program and student- vs. staff-run)?
*Should campuses be striving for one dominant model, a combination of
models, or something else?
*If there are a variety of models existing on a campus, how do we bring
them together? (this is particularly relevant if they are located in
different departments (academic affairs, student affairs, campus ministry)
and have different levels of institutional support and different
structures.

Those are _my_ thoughts!
