Susanne:
We are in the process of beginning a new emphasis on international
Service Learning. We come at it from a slightly different direction
than you do, in that the Service Learning sector of our curriculum is
very limited. I and several other faculty have begun working to
change that. What we now have is the largest academically based Field and
Experiential Learning program in the US, as a part of which we will run
almost two hundred courses for credit this year with about eighteen separate
international programs, ranging from Greenland to S. Africa. We also
have a very strong International Studies Program which promotes the
inclusion of international topics in the curriculum and runs three
residential "Study Abroad" programs in Costa Rica, the UK and Salzburg. We
would like to cover as many bases for international learning as we can, so we
have just gotten space for what will be called the "Center for International
Study and Travel". This center will be the contact point for all students
interested in any kind of international travel for credit. The two
additional pieces which will be added with the opening of the center will
be independent study for independent international travelers and
international service learning. We hope to be able to provide
independent study opportunities for students involved in independent
international service, and we also plan to offer group international
service opportunities. The Center will have students from our Travel
and Tourism program whose Coordinator is highly committed to
international service. The T & T students will be trained in helping
students to access service opportunities around the world, and will use the
internet to help students locate inexpensive fares. The Center will
open in March. At the same time, we will be beginning an extensive marketing
campaign to advertize the new international opportunities.
I would be interested in knowing how your program develops.
