Community Service "America Reads" Program Coordinator
In response to President Clinton's "America Reads" initiative, the
University of Michigan seeks a staff member to develop, organize and
implement a community service reading literacy program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This coordinator will be responsible for developing a tutorial corps of
university students; developing contacts and agreements with school
districts, preschool programs and/or community service agencies in
accordance with federal Title IV work-study regulations; and implementing
a high-impact program for preschool and elementary age school children.
The coordinator will work with university units and depart-ments, recruit
eligible work-study students, arrange transportation and other procedures;
arrange training and evaluation of participants; and develop an
educational component to enhance the learning of student corps members.
The coordinator also will facilitate the development of other community
service programs, and serve as a liaison between the Office of Financial
Aid and the Center for Learning through Community Service.
Necessary Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in education or a related field; experience in program
develop-ment and implementation; experience in the areas of education,
tutoring or literacy programs; ability to collaborate and work with
diverse constituencies; demonstrated public contact skills, awareness of
financial aid policies and procedures, and the ability to work occasional
evening and week-end hours as needed.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in education or a related field, prior experience in
direct teaching or school administration, counseling, and literacy program
development, direct experience or knowledge of financial aid policies and
procedures.
This is a full-time position, but there are opportunities for job sharing,
etc.
