Two service-learning positions available at the University of Maryland

Assistant Director, Office of Community Service-Learning

Contingent II Position – Full Time


The Assistant Director of the Office of Community Service-Learning
(OCSL) provides leadership in the planning and implementation of
services, programs, advocacy, and research initiatives for community
service-learning.  The mission of OCSL is to promote learning through
community service as integral to the education of all students.  The
office offers and supports academic and cocurricular programs that
foster student learning and development towards outcomes including civic
engagement, collaborative leadership, and appreciation of diversity.

Reporting to the Director of OCSL, the Assistant Director is directly
responsible for the development and support of academic
service-learning.

Specific responsibilities include:

*Works with the Director and others to establish office priorities;
conceptualize new directions; and organize functions, staff, and
resources effectively to achieve office goals
*Consults with faculty and academic administrators to develop and
implement service-learning courses, designs and implements faculty
development, and connects faculty with local and national resources
*Supervises graduate interns involved in project work; supports other
OCSL staff
*Collaborates with the Center for Teaching Excellence, Democracy
Collaborative, learning communities, and other campus units
*Raises institutional awareness of service-learning and its benefits
*Coordinates service-learning undergraduate teaching assistant and
instructional improvement grant programs
*Coodinates assessment and evaluation of service-learning
*Maintains online faculty handbook, database of service-learning faculty
and courses, and other resources
*Oversees development and maintenance of OCSL web site
*Keeps up to date on the latest developments in service-learning
*Coordinates office administrative processes and staff development;
serves as liaison regarding payroll, accounting, and other functions
*Assumes responsibilities of Director in her absence.

Qualifications:  Master’s degree and two years of full-time experience
in collegiate service-learning required.  Excellent oral and written
communication skills also required.  Preferred qualifications include
experience in one or more of the following:  teaching service-learning
courses, administration of service-learning programs, program
development, problem solving, assessment and evaluation, faculty
development.

Remuneration:  Salary $40,000-$42,000.  Excellent benefits package,
including health insurance, sick and annual leave, retirement subsidy,
and tuition remission.

Starting date:  July 1, 2004

Coordinator, America Reads

Contingent II Position—Full Time


The Coordinator of America Reads is responsible for the overall
leadership of the University of Maryland’s America Reads program.  The
goal of America Reads is to ensure that children can read well and
independently by the end of the third grade.  University of Maryland
students gain valuable skills and experience as Reading Mentors, while
earning money to pay college expenses.  This position reports to the
Director of the Office of Community Service-Learning/Advisor to the
President for America Reads.

Specific responsibilities include:

*Coordination of all aspects of the America Reads program, in which
approximately 80 Federal Work-Study (FWS) mentors work in 11 Prince
George’s County schools with high poverty levels and low reading scores
*Supervision of the America Reads leadership team consisting of the
Coordinator of Reading Mentor Training and the FWS Coordinator (graduate
assistant positions) plus in-school and office team leaders (student
staff)
*Liaisons with Prince George’s County school personnel, UM College of
Education, and other campus agencies
*Development and implementation of structured reflection for mentors
*Outreach and public relations
*Administration of Read Across America Day and Partners in Print parent
literacy program
*Program assessment and evaluation
*Recognition of program participants
*Grant proposals and development of corporate and other partnerships for
support and expansion of the program
*Participation in the Office of Community Service-Learning leadership
team and in the delivery of other OCSL services and programs
*Serving as a member of the President’s Task Force for America Reads.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in elementary education, psychology,
or related field required.  Master’s degree in one of these fields or in
college student personnel/higher education preferred.  Also required are
excellent oral and written communication skills.  Preferred candidates
will have experience in one or more of the following areas:  supervision
of college students, program management, campus-community partnerships,
elementary school teaching, reading tutoring, community service, grant
writing, assessment and evaluation, and work in a college setting.

Remuneration:  Salary $30,000-$32,000.  Excellent benefits package,
including health insurance, sick and annual leave, retirement subsidy,
and tuition remission.

Starting date:  July 1, 2004
