Hello everyone,
Below is a summary of responses from my question about service-learning assessment tools (see end of email for original posting). Thanks for your insight!

As senior program advisor for higher education for the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, we
developed a fact sheet on "tools and methods for evaluating service-learning in higher education."  It is available online at: http://www.servicelearning.org/article/archive/115/

Also, the California State University system is evaluating student learning outcomes.  Beginning in spring 2002, the project will last three academic terms and is examining whether service learning impacts
attitudinal change in students in four cluster areas. These areas are academic learning, community involvement, career preparation, and personal development. Using campus and national models as a guide, pre-course and post-course surveys were developed. So far, over 4,000 students have completed the surveys. The survey instruments and other details are available online at: http://www.calstate.edu/CSL/programs/servlearn_outcomes.shtml

The two resources I would steer you toward are:
Assessing Service-Learning and Civic Engagement: Principles and Techniques. This definitive volume offers a broad overview of issues related to assessment in higher education, with specific application for measuring the impact of service-learning and civic engagement initiatives on students, faculty, the institution, and the community. This revised edition provides a comparison of assessment methods, as well as sample assessment tools ranging from surveys to interviews to syllabus analysis guides. By Sherril B. Gelmon, Barbara A. Holland, Amy Driscoll, Amy Spring, and Seanna Kerrigan. 2001, 154 pages.  (available from Campus Compact s national website)
The other is a booklet put together by Jeffrey Howard at the University of Michigan it has a good section on assessing student learning outcomes.  It is essentially a how to guide for faculty.

Here is the online assessment website that I was talking about. Hope it is helpful. http://www.wcer.wisc.edu/salgains/instructor/default.asp

Dear all,

Here at UW-Madison, we are exploring ways to assess service-learning classes -- specifically, students' academic and personal development outcomes. We hope to develop a tool that can be used across campus in a variety of classes. Does your college/university have a campus-wide assessment instrument or methods? We would appreciate any examples you could provide. (Again, we are looking at student outcomes, not general satisfaction with the course or agency). We also would like to see any results you have collected. Please send information directly to Ann Dingman at aedingman@wisc.edu.

Thank you!
