Re: Presentations
12 February 2003 15:22 UTC
Seth. As coordinator of the campus-wide student volunteer program,
I make
presentations about precisely this topic every week to classes and
several student
organizations. This is the format I follow:
*brief history of volunteerism at the campus
* the mission of universities: research, teaching, service/civic
engagement
(ie,
preparing students for citizenship in our democracy)
* why volunteer in one's academic major (provide powerful examples of
learning
thru.
hands-on experience)
* what research shows about undergraduates who are "involved or
engaged"
in out of
class educational endeavors, specifically service
* what employers, grad. schools, med. schools, law schools look for
(again I
provide powerful quotes I hear directly from admissions
committees,
Career Services and emlpoyers)
* at our campus how we recognize volunteerism
(transcript
notation, Involvement Transcript, etc)
* tell students how many students volunteer, total hours each year
and
how many
organizations and people benefit thru. enhanced quality of life
This approach works very well with our undergraduate student
population. We
have a strong volunteer program.

Does anyone have a
presentation they would be willing to share on the general topic of
Volunteerism or "Why Volunteer?"
