POSITION DESCRIPTION
Assistant Director
Office for Service-Learning & Volunteer Programs
Colorado State University
The Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University
is a comprehensive student affairs program, which serves a
major state university and land grant college. The Division
of Student Affairs encompasses a wide array of departmental
services and programs addressing the needs of a student body
of approximately 21,000.
Colorado State is located in Fort Collins, a city of
120,000, which is 65 miles north of Denver. The city offers
a unique blend of metropolitan advantages and small town
friendliness. Situated at the western edge of the Great
Plains and at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountain
foothills, Fort Collins with its ideal climate provides easy
access to numerous outdoor activities.
Position Description
The Office for Service-Learning & Volunteer Programs (SLVP)
at Colorado State University offers a continuum of programs
and services for Colorado State University students, faculty
and staff. This Assistant Director coordinates the Service
Integration Project (SIP), a nationally recognized program
whose mission is to promote excellence in service-learning.
SIP’s goals are to provide support and resources to faculty
interested in the integration of service-learning into
teaching, research, service and extension; to meet
community-defined needs and cultivate community partner
relationships; to develop student leaders in the field of
service-learning; to encourage service-learning research;
and, to disseminate models of service-learning excellence to
stakeholders within and beyond Colorado State University.
This position also supervises ServiceBank, a community
placement referral program that tracks community needs and
links students to service sites both through
extra-curricular motivations and through service-learning
courses. Potential to be a national leader in the
service-learning profession.
Specific Responsibilities
Oversee and coordinate all SIP services including faculty
training, faculty fellowships, the student service-learning
assistantship program, faculty/community mini-grants,
service-learning awards, community partner workshops and
individual consultations with faculty, students and
community.
Design, coordinate and teach the Service-Learning Scholars
curriculum (a 6-week training series for faculty), half-day
Service-Learning Faculty Fellows workshops, full-day
Community Partner Workshops and other training
opportunities.
Manage up to $200,000 budget including dissemination of
grants and stipends to participants and tracking grant
activity through collaboration with the Office Manager and
the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Responsible for application, oversight, management,
compliance and reporting of federal grants.
Responsible for progress, end-of-year reports, evaluations
and fiscal reports as requested by university
administration.
Supervise a full-time Research and Technology Coordinator
who is responsible for implementing program evaluation,
designing a comprehensive research agenda and supporting
faculty involved in service-learning research. This
position is also responsible for the SIP database and
webpage.
Supervise a graduate assistant who is responsible for
recruiting, selecting, training and monitoring the Student
Service-Learning Assistants and is the Managing Editor for
the Service-Learning LINK newsletter.
Supervise three work-study students who coordinate
ServiceBank by developing community partnerships,
maintaining the ServiceBank database, and meeting with
students to make site referrals.
Provide support to the SIP faculty advisory committee by
coordinating committee meetings and activities. The
committee advises SIP on programming design, program policy,
mission and institutionalization issues.
Participate as a staff member in the full activities of the
Office for Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs,
assisting in student staff development, office retreats,
community trainings and overall program design and
development.
Participate as a staff member within the Division of Student
Affairs, serving on committees and attending meetings and
events as appropriate.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree.
Minimum of two (2) years paid experience in community and
program development.
Minimum of two years experience and demonstrated expertise
in supervision and administration.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent teaching and public speaking skills.
Excellent facilitation skills.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with faculty,
students, community leaders and administrators.
Fully understand and articulate a service-learning
philosophy, with particular emphasis on service integration
in higher education.
Ability to write and manage large federal grants.
Demonstrated ability to create links between the
educational sector and the community sector.
Excellent writing skills.
A demonstrated personal and professional commitment to
ethnically diverse people, people with disabilities, women
and non-traditional people.
Successful grant-writing experience.
Experience in service-learning in higher education.
Teaching and curriculum development experience.
Salary: This is a mid-level administrative position. Salary
to be commensurate with experience. 12 month appointment
with full benefit package.
