(Fwd) SL programs' governance structures
20 February 2002 22:52 UTC
Hi all,
A community-based colleague and I are looking for information on decision-
making processes and structures in higher-education-focused service-
learning offices and programs.
Specifically, we would like to gather information on if and how community
partners and community members are involved as formal decision-makers --
e.g., on governing boards, etc -- in service-learning offices and programs
and related entities (e.g., university-community partnership offices).
So...I have two questions for the list:
1. Has any broad-ranging research been done on this issue? If so, how could
we get hold of it? (apologies if I've missed something that's really obvious
and out there)
2. Although we don't have the resources to conduct a full-fledged study of
our own, I think that it would be really useful to hear from my colleagues on
this list (that's you!) to get a sense of what is out there. So, I'd love to
hear
from you on the following questions
*Who is formally empowered to make decisions for your SL office and
programs and/or related entities?
*What is the balance between university folks and community folks in these
formal bodies/processes?
*Is there a difference between formal decision-making structures "on paper"
and the way decisions actually are made? If so, how does that affect
community voice?
Note: While we are not entirely uninterested in things like advisory groups,
we are really looking for information on formally/structurally empowered
decision-making bodies.
Oh, and I will certainly post a compilation of replies back to the list if
there is
interest.
Thanks in advance for your replies!
With appreciation,
Michelle
