Dear Michelle, Break Away® trains and supports college student leaders (as well as staff) in developing quality alternative break programs that send groups of students on service-learning experiences during their vacation periods. We also provide the SiteBank, a database of more than 200 nonprofit organizations interested in hosting Break Away® volunteers. If your student is interested in becoming a leader and working with you (and hopefully other students/faculty/staff) to establish a Break Away® program at your college, then we can help you do just that. We have several publications and resources, a membership program (with strong networking/idea sharing opportunities), and training opportunities to assist you in starting a program and connecting you with the national alternative break movement so that your students have alternative break opportunities (and leadership experience) for years to come. Unfortunately, our "Eight Quality Components" curriculum that inspires lifelong active citizenship requires several months of pre-trip preparation, including site development, education, orientation, training, and several other components that would prevent you from organizing a trip for students this spring. However, your student may be interested in spending her spring break week fleshing out the beginnings of a program for next year that will flourish for years to come. I would strongly encourage you to send a representative to our national alternative break training sessions this summer. You can find more information through our website at www.alternativebreaks.org. If your student is not interested in becoming a leader (or organizing a trip for a group of your students) and simply wants to volunteer for a week this spring, many of our nonprofit affiliate partners are able to facilitate individual volunteer vacations: Cross Cultural Solutions (www.crossculturalsolutions.org) Volunteers for Peace (www.vfp.org) Organic Volunteers (www.organicvolunteers.com) Witness for Peace (www.witnessforpeace.org) Global Volunteers (www.globalvolunteers.org) Orphanage Outreach (www.orphanage-outreach.org) I hope these leads help, perhaps we can help you start a program on your campus for next year!
