We hope you can join us for this exciting conference on service-learning
in graduate nursing education

"Integrating Community Engagement into Graduate Nursing Education Through
Service-Learning"

Sponsored by the Community-Based Care Project, MSN Program, Frances Payne
Bolton School of Nursing. Case Western Reserve University. Cleveland, OH.

Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26, 2002

By the end of the institute, the participant teams will:
1. Describe the purpose and advantages of integrating community engagement
through service-learning (CETSL) into graduate nursing education.
2. Describe the theoretical components of service-learning and
community-campus partnerships.
3. Identify a consensus-based goal to integrate CETSL.
4. Describe an existing model of community-based graduate nursing
education through service-learning (assessment, planning, implementation,
and evaluation).
5. Examine the academic and community-partner environments in which their
CETSL will occur.
6. Explore the factors that could impact their plans to implement CETSL.
7. Develop specific strategies/action plans with timeframes for
accomplishing their goal.
8. Examine strategies for promoting scholarship and sustaining
service-learning from the perspective of faculty, students, and community
partner agency.

Participants will include 15-20 teams from graduate nursing programs.
Teams composed of: one faculty member, one community partner (current or
potential), one student

Cost: Conference sessions, housing (for one night) and meals will be
provided by the Community-Based Care Project. Participant teams are
responsible for a $100 team registration fee and transportation to and
from the institute.

CEUs will be applied for.

Application:    The application should be sent by the faculty member/team
leader. In a few paragraphs, describe your interest in and experience with
service-learning and community engagement. Describe the course and program
into which you plan to implement service-learning.  Describe the purpose
and population of the community partner agency with whom faculty have
already worked or would like to work.

Include the following information: Name of academic institution and name,
address, phone, fax and email for the faculty member (team leader),
community partner, and graduate nursing student. Include a copy of the
course syllabus, a letter of support from the Director of the MSN Program
and curriculum vitae for each team member.
