Questions about potential problems in service-learning.

I am working with Elise Dallimore, a colleague in our Communications
Studies Department, on the beginning stages of research on problems that
can arise in service-learning and ways that those problems can be solved or
reduced. We would like feedback from List members on problems they have
experienced and ways they have responded. Also, if you know of research or
systematic institutional responses regarding such problems, please steer us
in the right direction.

Potential problem areas that we have identified through our work and
discussions at conferences are:
     1) Insufficient learning outcomes for students.
     2) Undesireable effects on students' values.
     3) Organizational deficiencies including insufficient supervision,
bad planning, etc.
     4) Physical risks to students.
     5) Excessive demands on students.
     6) Student irresponsibility or incompetence.
     7) Illegal behavior and liability issues.
     8) Breaching confidentiality of clients and other ethical issues.

We will summarize the responses which we receive and post them on the List.
We thank you in advance for your help.
