Break Away®: The Alternative Break Connection proudly announces its
2002 ALTERNATIVE BREAK CITIZENSHIP SCHOOLS (ABCs)
"One of the best experiences of my life. There is so much info that can be pulled from the ABCs...ideas that are given here are so helpful and I donąt think any [alternative break program] can be successful without having someone attend." - 2001 Michigan ABCs Participant
Break Away® is the only national organization dedicated to providing colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations the tools they need to implement quality alternative break programs. With 65 chapters around the country and more than 200 nonprofit affiliates worldwide, Break Away® uses alternative breaks to create lifelong active citizens: people who value community and make it a priority in their life choices.
Don't miss this opportunity to connect with dozens of experienced leaders in the field while gaining ideas on how to take your alternative break program to the next level (or start a new one on the right foot) by incorporating the Break Away® philosophy and Eight Quality Components. The ABCs are geared toward students and faculty/staff that are involved in the leadership or coordination of alternative break programs, but nonprofit organizations that host alternative break groups have also benefited from the experience.
THIS SUMMER'S TRAINING DATES, HOST INSTITUTIONS, AND SERVICE ISSUES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
June 21-28, University of Kansas (Native American Issues)
July 12-19, University of Vermont (Rural Poverty)
In Kansas, participants will learn about issues facing Native Americans while assisting with projects ranging from building maintenance to environmental restoration. Most projects will be coordinated through the Pelathe Center.
In Vermont, participants will work with a variety of agencies related to the issue of rural poverty. Potential partners include Habitat for Humanity, King Street Youth Center, Committee on Temporary Shelter, and the Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf.
A service-learning model, the ABCs experience combines service, workshops, teambuilding, collaboration, speaker panels, and reflection sessions in a dynamic 6-day alternative break environment. Thanks to the fun, laid back atmosphere and "excellent hands-on activities" participants continuously walk away from the training confident that they can tackle the challenge of creating or improving their alternative break programs.
"ABCs simulated an alternative break at its best‹every component for positive experiential learning was utilized and I had an incredible experience overall."
