I'd like to thank all of you who responded to my question about the role of
service-learning and violence prevention. Here is a summary of the info I
received:

There is a Breakaway ASB site in Detroit that works with a program called
Save Our Sons And Daughters (SOSAD). As part of their ASB program, they
train and educate college students about the issues that their children
face in the Detroit community and provide the students with opportunities
to work with these children. You can get more info about the program on
Breakaway's web site at:

Street Law's website (www.streetlaw.org) is a great resource for obtaining
information and ideas about violence prevention and youth participatory
programs such as their "Teens, Crime, and the Community" Program.

The Teaching Tolerance Website also contains valuable information. Here is
a blurb from their website:

Founded in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance
supports the efforts of K-12 teachers and other educators to promote
respect for differences and appreciation of diversity. Teaching Tolerance
serves as a clearinghouse of information about anti-bias programs and
activities being implemented in schools across the country. Teaching
Tolerance also produces and distributes free, high-quality anti-bias
materials.

Their website is: http://www.tolerance.org/teach/index.jsp

You may also find their partner website tolerance.org useful as well.

I'm still following some other suggestions and one I get that information I
will post it.

Regards

Warren

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing
evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but
you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you
murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely
increases hate...Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness
cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive
out hate: Only love can do that." Martin Luther King, Jr.
