Courses with SL and non-SL sections
13 February 2002 21:20 UTC
Dear Colleagues,
I am working on my dissertation and am hoping for some help from some of
you. I am trying to identify fall 2002 courses that have multiple sections,
some of which have service learning, some of which do not. I will be doing a
comparison between students who participated in SL and those who did not. If
you or someone you know who will be teaching an SL section that might have a
companion non-SL section (or vice-versa) please contact me at
rmuthiah@indiana.edu <mailto:rmuthiah@indiana.edu> . Contacting me certainly
does not commit you to anything! Collaborating instructors will receive
course level data at the completion of the study.
My intention is to do the best I can to approximate experimental design, so
the more alike the sections are, the better (e.g., same instructor, same
text books, same assignments other than SL, etc.). Any information you can
provide on the level of similarity between SL and non-SL courses would be
helpful.
A quick word about my study...
Students will complete the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ)
at the end of the fall semester of 2002. I will then compare responses of SL
and non-SL students to see if there are significant differences, especially
in areas that SL literature differences would be expected.
The CSEQ, now in its 4th edition, is used widely as an assessment tool at
institutions across the country. It includes 13 scales that measure "quality
of effort" in areas such as course learning, contact with faculty, and peer
relationships. In addition there are 25 gains items that are broken down
into 5 groups - general education, personal/social development,
science/technology, intellectual skills, and vocational competence (more
info. on the CSEQ can be found at www.indiana.edu/~cseq
<http://www.indiana.edu/~cseq> ).
Thanks for any help you can provide.
