Food and Farming Issues in Service-Learning
07 February 2002 20:07 UTC
Xavier,
I very much admire the work at Oxfam, and am happy to help. I coordinate a
service-learning program on a university campus in rural Minnesota. Last
spring and fall we had two service-learning classes related to agriculture:
1) Sociology 3201 and 3202 Sharing Best Practices in Civic Agriculture
(Spring, May Term 2001)
Taught by Wynne Wright, who is now at the University of Northern Iowa
2) Political Science 3401, a US Foreign Policy class that looked at the
impact of globalization on local farming (Fall 2001). Taught by Seung-Ho
Joo, joos@mrs.umn.edu
You can read descriptions of the courses at

Click on the course number under the appropriate semester. Or contact me
for more information.

>I come to you with a question about service related to agriculture. Oxfam
>America has selected Food and Farm Issues as one of its topics for its
>college program. We have US-partners working on this issue in the government
>arena as well as other international partners working on food security
>issues on global platform. I want to know if anyone has had experience
>crafting college service programs with an emphasis on food and farming, for

>service purchasing or hosting farmer's markets on campus so students can by

>farmer's face in today's economy. Oxfam America is trying to put together a
