public interest law student internships, high school servicescholarship

FYI -
National Association for Public Interest Law Accepting
Applications for Summer Internships
Deadline: Rolling (but as soon as possible)
The National Association for Public Interest Law
( http://www.napil.org/ ) was founded in 1986 by law
students dedicated to surmounting barriers to equal
justice that affect millions of low-income individuals
and families. NAPIL works to organize, train, and support
public service-minded law students and is a national
leader in creating summer and postgraduate public interest
jobs.
NAPIL currently is accepting applications for its Summer
Corps program. The program will provide a $1,000 education
award voucher to 175 law students who spend the summer of
2002 providing direct legal services in underrepresented
communities. Through their internships, Summer Corps
members receive hands-on training in legal representation
while having a positive impact on the lives of the low-
income clients they serve. The Summer Corps enables law
students to earn an education award voucher while serving
in public-interest internships with nonprofit organizations
of their choosing.
To be eligible, applicants must be attending a law school
with a NAPIL member group in good standing (see the NAPIL
Web site for a list of member groups) and must document
that they are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a legal
permanent resident. To apply, applicants must first obtain
a qualifying internship at a nonprofit host organization.
The Summer Corps supports projects in which students
provide primarily direct legal services to low-income
individuals. Community outreach and education components
are also permissible. Summer Corps members will be expected
to serve a minimum of 381 hours on-site (approximately 9.5
weeks at 40 hours a week).
See the NAPIL Web site for complete application
guidelines and an online application form. Applications
will be reviewed as they are received; applicants are
urged to apply immediately to improve their chances
for acceptance into the program.

Comcast Expands Scholarship Program Rewarding High
School Seniors' Commitment to Community Service
Deadline: April 1, 2002
The Comcast Foundation's Leaders of Tomorrow scholarship
program awards grants to high school seniors on the basis
of their community service, leadership skills, positive
attitude, and academic achievement.
In its inaugural year of 2000-01, the program rewarded
250 young leaders in communities served by Comcast in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware with one-time
$1,000 grants to be used toward their pursuit of higher
education. For 2001-2002, the foundation has announced
that it is expanding the program to include high school
seniors in communities in Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut,
Indiana, Michigan, and New Mexico. With the expansion, the
program will make $1,000 scholarship awards to 700 young
people in nine states.
To qualify for the Comcast Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
in 2002, nominees must be nominated by their high school
principal; be full-time seniors attending high school in
a community served by Comcast Cable's Eastern Division or
a community in Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, or
New Mexico served by Comcast's Midwest Cable Division;
have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher; demonstrate
leadership abilities in school activities or through work
experiences; and exhibit a strong commitment to community
service involvement.
Application materials and additional information will be
available at participating high schools in late January.
For a complete list of the participating communities in
each state and for further information on the application
process, see the Comcast Foundation Web site.
