employment opportunity at UCLA
21 February 2001 22:56 UTC
Colleagues,
UCLA is currently searching for an executive director for our
service-learning center (which also includes experiential education in
general). This is a new position, and is a great opportunity to be
creative with a program that is well-established but has some new
dimensions as well. Please distribute widely. I understand this will be
posted in the March 2 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Lori Vogelgesang
Executive Director
Center for Experiential Education & Service Learning, UCLA
The Center for Experiential Education and Service Learning (CEESL) is
a unit of the Office of Instructional Development (OID) and is designed
to develop, coordinate, and support experiential education and service
learning opportunities for UCLA students. CEESL programs operate on
the principles of active learning and incorporate students’ hands-on
experiences with traditional classroom education. CEESL
experiences include academic internships for which UCLA undergraduates
receive academic credit, field studies, and community service and social
change projects to link experiences to wider theoretical concerns, issues
of public service, and possible professional options for students.
CEESL’s efforts include direct assistance to individual faculty and
students interested in incorporating experiential education and service
learning in their courses and studies.
The Executive Director of CEESL is directly responsible for guiding the
allocation and management of resources to effectively address campus wide
goals for experiential education and service learning, and for
implementing the academically oriented projects, programs, services, and
activities which best meet those goals. The incumbent is expected
to be knowledgeable about the resources and needs of students, faculty,
and community so that he or she can creatively “harness” the resources of
the parties involved in a mutually beneficial manner while assuring that
rigorous academic learning occurs. The Executive Director reports
jointly to the Assistant Director for Instructional Improvement Programs
in OID and the Faculty Director of CEESL.
Qualifications: An earned doctorate in a related field is
required. In depth understanding of experiential education and
service learning with a proven ability to communicate and implement
academic service agendas. Experience in collaborative management,
personnel supervision, and fiscal planning. Demonstrated experience
in one or more of the following areas: curriculum and syllabus
development; basic educational research and evaluation skills;
pedagogical training as related to experiential education and service
learning. Knowledge of theories and practices related to
instruction, education, and community service. Ability to define
work agendas, implement strategic pans, set goals, and provide
administrative direction and follow through. Experience in staff
supervision, program direction, and employee development.
Experience in developing new projects, proposals and initiatives and in
creating an environment that supports their successful adoption.
Ability to balance pedagogical and curricular concerns of academic
traditions with needed innovations. Knowledge of local community,
potential service learning sites, and opportunities for obtaining grants
and extramural funding. Awareness of UC system-wide and national
service learning initiatives. Proven record of working successfully
with faculty, staff, and students (grad and undergrad). Ability to
work with individual initiative, yet retain group affiliation and provide
communication to all relevant parties. Appropriate academic and
professional credentials necessary to work effectively with all sectors
of the campus (students, faculty, staff) and with prospective community
sponsors from both public and private sectors. Knowledge of UCLA
curricula and the general academic, administrative and instructional
structures and policies at UCLA preferred.
Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and
qualifications, but not less than $53,976 annually. Qualified
applicants should send a resume and letter of application addressing
their qualifications to: Dr. Maureen McHale, Office of
Instructional Development, UCLA, Box 951515, Los Angeles, CA
90095-1515. Review of applications will begin March 15 and continue
until position is filled.
UCLA is an equal opportunity employer.
