Director, Volunteer and Public Service Center
The Volunteer and Public Service Center seeks a Director who is a
passionate service-learning advocate, experienced manager/administrator,
and committed educator. The responsibilities of the Director include:
overall management and administration of VPS programs and staff; outreach
to Georgetown students, faculty, and staff to promote and develop community
service and service-learning initiatives within the university*s service
and education mission; development and maintenance of sufficient resources
to undertake community service initiatives; outreach to the Washington D.C.
community to create and maintain appropriate service partnerships; research
to evaluate and assess VPS Center programs; and teach service-learning
courses.
The VPS Center operates five staff-directed service programs*the After
School Kids program, the D.C. Schools Project, D.C. Reads, First-year
Orientation to Community Involvement, and Summer of Service. Staff also
runs the Service-Learning Credit program, through which students integrate
community service into their courses to attain an additional credit. The
Center provides support for 21 student-directed service programs. There
are ten full-time VPS Center staff, one of whom provides administrative
support. The VPS Center operates a fleet of 20 vehicles to provide
transportation for students* service activities and manages over $500,000
in grant support for community service. The VPS Center Director reports to
the Dean of Students.
The Director works with student groups to ensure that they engage in the
sound practice of service, provide adequate training and development
opportunities for volunteers, and maintain effective and equitable
community partnerships. Georgetown University is a Catholic, Jesuit
institution, so the Director is responsible for ensuring that the promotion
of social justice is a primary element of the Center*s programs.
Salary and benefits: The pay level is competitive, commensurate with
previous experience. Full university benefits provided.
Requirements: Minimum Master*s degree in a relevant discipline, Ph.D.
preferred, and 5-8 years of experience in community service program
development. Supervisory, management, and fundraising experience is
required. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability
to relate to a wide range of individuals are required. Significant
experience with service-learning is required, as is experience in training
and development. A proven history of building partnerships with faculty
and community members is required.
