Establishing Service Offices on Campus
20 December 1999 17:41 UTC
Maine Campus Compact is interested in helping institutions develop
strategies for the establishment of service offices on campuses. It will
really help our efforts to know the histories of some existing service
offices.
If you have a service or service-learning office on your campus, would you
be willing to send us a brief email letting us know your history? We will
compile all the answers and share them with the list. Please direct all
responses to astreete@abacus.bates.edu.
For example:
Marvelous University
Our service program started out as a student-run volunteer program. When
faculty started to become interested in service-learning, they first
channelled their students through our programs, but they found that the
turnover in student leadership was making things a little unpredictable. A
small group of them petitioned the provost for funds for a half-time
position and an office. It took 2 years and many meetings and data
gathering, but the office was funded and houses service-learning and the
student service programs. As service-learning grew, we were able to
document the demands on staff and lobby the provost for more positions. We
now have 1.5 FTE staff, and 4 student leaders and we report to the
Assisstant Provost for Undergraduate Studies.
